Sliding door installation with adapted antique Japanese shoji

Installations require close, collaborative work with the homeowner, designer, architect and builder.  Attention is paid to framing requirements, finish carpentry and build-outs.  Most important is the special attention paid to detail.  Many of the architectural elements used for installation show the handwork of the craftspersons who fashioned them.  Since the pieces are usually old they must be rebuilt or modified to handle everyday contemporary use.

An example is the installation pictured above.  Japanese sliding doors would have slid on tracks mounted at floor level and borne the weight from the bottom.  Modern Western sliding doors hang from glides and tracking.  The standard Western door opening is also larger than the a Japanese doorway.  Custom work, then, includes framing around the doors which in turn can then support their own weight and have the dimension to fill out the door opening.

The result is a beautiful, functional doorway reminiscent of a different time and culture.

Installation services range from simple wall hangings to complex mountings such as the Japanese kura (warehouse) door below.  In this example, a special steel mounting bracket was designed and fabricated to bear the heavy elm (keyaki) door in the corner of the room.
